In the aftermath of last night’s World Cup playoff between France and Ireland, something left a sour taste in the mouths of anyone who champions fair play in football, Ireland’s luck didn’t merely run out - it was metaphorically blackmailed, stolen and murdered, amid a furore of a sure-fire handball by Thierry Henry that led to Les Bleus’ winner and the rest of the world feeling symphatic. So we at ShortList got thinking of all the sporting injustices in football, the sorest of subjects and with gritted teeth came up with our top five.
Maradona cheats England
The enemy may be old, but for England fans the wounds are still deep. In Mexico 1986, when shorts were short and Maradona was shorter, perhaps the greatest footballer who has ever played the game scored with his fist, etching the moment in history as Hand of God, as the players sprinted to the ref in the same fashion as the Irish did last night. Though the stocky Argentinean’s second goal was a beauty.
