At the height of the McCarthy witch-hunts in the 1950s, the phrase ‘reds under the bed’ alluded to the idea that rabid communists were plotting revolution everywhere – and people wonder why America remains such a paranoid country.

Anyway, enough of foreign policy. Why keep redheads under a bed? That's got to be illegal surely? Some equal opportunities board must be campaigning against this blatant discrimination.

Because, let’s face it, after one look at these flame-haired beauties, who hasn’t got mad copper-coloured hair love? Not us, for sure…

But it’s still her doe-eyed, all-round girl-next-door goodness that floors us every time. Hubby Sacha Baron Cohen no doubt concurs.

Why we love her: Although the phrase ‘And God created woman’ is usually applied to Brigitte Bardot, we like to think it’s equally applicable to Christina Hendricks. The powerful femininity her Mad Men character Joan Harris (nee Holloway) exudes is more of an aphrodisiac than all the oysters in Whitstable. Interesting fact: Hendricks is a natural blonde. Don’t feel cheated, she made a conscious choice to go red. Maybe redheads do have more fun.

Why we love her: Six Feet Under might have been something of a slog at times – ok, death is a drag, we get that – but Lauren Ambrose’s character Claire Fisher made up for it. A rebellious, pot-smoking, sexuality-experimenting, fiery redhead, Claire’s narrative arc – from surly teen to creative photographer – was as endearing as it was compelling. That Ambrose made it so believable is why she’ll always have a special place in our box set hall of fame.

Oh yes, she could twist us any which way ‘round her little finger.
