This Cara Delevingne interview may be one of the most awkward ever

A good rule of thumb when interviewing A-listers on camera: try to get the interviewee’s name right. Just a thought.

Unfortunately for the ineptly prepared news team of Good Day Sacramento, that was just the first in a long line of blunders when they spoke via satellite link to Cara Delevingne about the actress’s new film Paper Towns, yesterday.

Quickly descending into an utter shambles, Carla – wait, sorry – Cara appeared less than enthused as the hosts got her name wrong, twice, responding with sarcasm-laced answers to a few mundane and, arguably, insulting questions, like whether she’d even read the book or the script.

Here at ShortList, we’re well aware that junket interviews don’t always go to plan: no matter how well versed you become at making witty patter look natural while forcing small talk with a jetlagged A-lister in the midst of some dingy, darkened hotel room as a braying pack of publicists hover around you, sometimes things just go awry. But when a star appears cold or aloof, it’s your job to warm them up, or simply grin and bear it.

Clearly that wasn’t the thinking of the hosts of this show, who then invited another panellist to rub her up the wrong way, suggesting she wasn’t as lively as she had been when he’d seen her on a recent UK show. Asked by the anchors if she’s irritated or if it’s just the news show, to which she replied with all the deadpan of a seasoned movie star “No, I think it’s just you.”

Then it got even more cringe-worthy with one of the hosts asking, "Why don’t you go take a little nap, maybe get a Red Bull?" Cue a rolling of eyeballs and a raising of those bushy trademark eyebrows from the model turned actress.

And as the feed cuts from the screen, then the most animated host of all comes up with another low blow: "You make $5 million for six weeks of work, you can pretend to talk to Good Day Sacramento with some ‘oomph!'"

You stay classy, Sacramento.
