These brutal illustrations sum up today's society perfectly

When you step back from the modern world and take a look at what we're doing, it can be faintly depressing.

The iPhone-clasping march of consumerism, capitalism, narcissism, technology, and social media's hold on us all - it sometimes seems like a strange and unfriendly planet.

These incredible illustrations by Belgium-based Brecht Vandenbroucke address these issues head-on - but with wit and intelligence, with his Instagram account a must-follow (if you excuse the irony of recommending yet more social media to gawp at).

It's not all bad, of course, so take a look at the thought-provoking images and look at things from a different angle.
