Southern Hemisphere's Tallest Tower Build Given Go Ahead

Australia is set to hold the record for the Southern Hemisphere's tallest building, as it has just been given the go ahead to build a new 388 metre-high edifice.

Designed by architects Fender Katsalidis, the structure will contain a staggering 108 levels, and as well as apartments, it will include a six-star hotel at the top, which will have a lobby on the 84th floor. Other features include two restaurants, two bars and lounges, as well as a fresh food market.

The project, entitled Australia 108 (no prizes for where the name comes from), is set to be located on Melbourne’s popular culture and dining area 70 Southbank Boulevard.

While the Ozzies can currently bask in their tall tower glory, there's also a chance that the title could be swiftly taken away from them, as an even taller skyscraper is set to be completed in South Africa the same year – the 447-metre-high Centurion-Symbio City tower in Tshwane.

Better get a move on then.
