ShortList's 10 Greatest Captions

caphero.png

The ShortList picture caption sure does split the masses. Some love it, others hate it, but it will come as a surprise to the haters that the vast majority love a chuckle at our production desks witty image annotation.

So for the 50.3% who think they're great, here's the 10 best ShortList captions through 200 issues, as chosen by sub-editors, production editors and out-and-out editors of years gone by.

This caption graced issue 1. It was downhill from there...

From our To Do List section, issue 30.

Arguably the very finest caption ever to grace ShortList Magazine. If that's the case we shot our bolt early, back in the Travel section of issue 35.

Car captions are the curse of the sub-editor. This moment of Fast Show genius got us out of one of many automotive holes. (Issue 42)

Sorry Yoko (Issue 56)

Even the caption skeptics must doff cap to this. What? No? Fair dues. (Issue 82)

We used to have a section called ShortList 10s. Nobody spotted it when we renamed it ShortLists , thus cunningly removing the need for us to find 10. Good story, right? This caption came from there (Issue 89)

Fifty issues ago (Issue 150 maths fans) this graced Notebook. The Deputy Production Editor responsible soon declared his innings and switched departments to a standing ovation. A fitting lift of the bat, you'll agree.

ROFLCOPTER! (Issue 187)

And we're still going strong, right? All the way up to this in issue 196 and beyond, right?
