Postage stamp paintings

Admit it, you're impressed

Postage stamp paintings
16 January 2012

Sometimes it pays to just hold your hands up and say, ‘that, my friend, is a great idea’. Such an utterance might appear naïve and anachronistic in our cynical world, but to hell with it, we like to applaud ingenuity.

And when we first clapped eyes on these stamp paintings we found we couldn’t get out our praise quick enough. The work of American artist Molly Rausch, what we are essentially talking about here is a series of paintings that not only take inspiration from the humble stamp, but incorporate it into the artwork.

So Molly will take the existing imagery and then imagine the stamp in a wider piece of art. Done by freehand, without adulterating the stamp and with no research undertaken, they are purely the result of unbridled creativity and invention.

By the very nature of utilising stamps in such a fashion, the finished paintings are quite small – generally about three inches tall – but, in this case great things do come in small packages.
