How To Protest

Danny Glover isn’t just about shouting at Mel Gibson. He’s about shouting at the system too, with a lifetime of political activism under his belt. The producer of ace documentary The Black Power Mixtape (out now on DVD) details how to fight the power.

“Be united. Attend your chosen protest with as many friends as you can gather who all feel strongly about the cause. When using protest signs, ensure they acknowledge the group of protesters. This will demonstrate a focused and united front.”

“Be organised. Before the protest, decide on your strategy, objectives and the message you want to deliver. Protesting is a positive reaction to failure in the system, but those with power and influence should be the ones affected most. Inconveniencing the general public will not win their support.”

“Do not be provoked. Democracy is the right to dissent, not to destroy. Many demonstrations begin peacefully yet are misled by a minority whose objectives differ. Do not be provoked by them or by people in authority. Be passionate but do not give the police grounds to arrest you. Violence taints the cause.”

“Be clear. The media is your greatest weapon but can also be your achilles heel. A misinformed protester on television can devalue the protest. If you choose to speak to the media about the reasons behind your protest, know your subject inside out. If you are not confident, elect a spokesperson that best represents the movement and can articulate clearly. Stay positive, stay united and exercise your power as a group and as individuals.”
