Floating Thames Cycle Path Planned For London

While London cyclists face many day-to-day pitfalls (dastardly white van men, U-turning cabbies, dwindling space on gridlocked roads), last time we checked drowning wasn't one of them…

What you're looking at could be the future of pedal pushing in the Capital: the River Cycleway Consortium has proposed a cycle path which would float on the Thames, stretching 12km from the banks in Canary Wharf in the east to Battersea in the south west.

Access to the £600m aqua path would be granted via ramps from each end, costing a flat rate of £1.50, which would go towards the £600m the project would cost to build. And don’t worry about being marooned, stopping points and refreshment zones would be present across the route.

While the eco benefits are gallingly obvious, the best effect of such a maverick plan would be freeing space on a road system already blighted by motor incidents, and in turn would hand more protection to the cyclist.

That, and it looks really, really cool.
