We can think of few more frustrating things in life than planning something from creation, through development, ready for the final stage - and then not being able to complete the product.

But, sadly, this is often the life that awaits an architect, whose dreams and visions are often cruelly prevented from becoming reality. As the discussion rages on about whether the proliferation of new, oddly-shaped buildings on London's skyline is a good thing, it's interesting to see what could have been there instead.

This fascinating infographic, created by roofing firm RubberBond, collects together a series of unbuilt designs, including some by the likes of Gaudi, Wright and Foster, which could have become iconic - had they actually been made.

Read on to discover how London could have had its own Eiffel Tower and New York could have had a globe tower with four circuses in; both of these certainly look infinitely preferable to an oversized, death-ray producing walkie-talkie. Click the image to view a larger version.
