Chilean miners sign movie deal

The Hollywoodisation begins...

Chilean miners sign movie deal

It was always going to happen. But, now the question is: will Chile suddenly become Ohio and will the all-male team suddenly gain a sassy but sexy female member?

After a tough bidding battle, where Brad Pitt was rumoured to be negotiating for the win, the rights have fallen to Mike Medavoy, producer of Shutter Island and Black Swan. It's a résumé that suggests that the miners may have worse things to fear than the mine itself.

The script is being written by Jose Rivera, who wrote the screenplay for The Motorcycle Diaries. It's the first time the men have all agreed to share the full details of what happened as they wanted to wait until an offer came along that would allow them all equal proceeds.

In case you were also caught in a mine last October, the film will tell the story of the 33 miners who were trapped 2,000ft underground in northern Chile.

Javier Bardem is rumoured to star, but we fear this rumour may only exist as he speaks Spanish. By that logic, Antonio Banderas is also rumoured to be starring.
