Bono wants to send Chris Rock and Amy Schumer to fight ISIS

1.jpg

Oh Bono. Someone's been watching a little too much Team America haven't they?

The U2 frontman has decided that the best way to fight violent extremism and groups such as ISIS is to use comedians.

He was speaking at a Senate subcommittee hearing (how exactly did he get invited to that by the way?) which was dealing with the "causes and consequences of violent extremism and the role of foreign assistance". Bono, who has never shied away from politics, was joining a panel of diplomats and aid experts to urge the US government to commit to more assistance in the Middle East and the growing refugee crisis caused by violence in the region.

He called for a new package of aid, similar to that given to Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War under the Marshall Plan. And then also said that laughter could be a weapon too.

He stated, "When aid is structured properly, with a focus on fighting poverty and improving governance, it could just be the best bulwark we have against the extremism of our age."

He then added, "The first people that Adolf Hitler threw out of Germany were the dadaists and surrealists. It's like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them when they are goose-stepping down the street and it takes away their power. So I am suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you."

He sort of has a point. But, at the same time, it's a ludicrous suggestion.

So far, only Schumer has responded to this unilateral call for her to enter a war zone.

We imagine that Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen are too busy getting their best gags ready for their imminent trip to the Middle East to comment.

Tell you what Bono, why don't you go in first and then we'll all be behind you. Promise.
