Vodka saves elephants from death

Alcohol, is there anything it can't do?

Vodka has saved two circus elephants from freezing to death in the Siberian forest. They would have succumbed to frostbite and pneumonia without it.

The jumbo animals were in a trailer that caught fire and had to be evacuated into the farcically cold temperatures. Their trainers had to wait for a truck to take them to the warmth of a local gym, and during the wait they gave them the booze. Enough to keep alive, but too little to get them drunk.

Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda reports that trainer Leonid Labo gave the animals ten litres of vodka diluted with warm water.

Only the tips of nellies' ears were frostbitten.
