How to taste tequila

Tequila is so much more than a Terrorvision song. Nidal Ramini of Mexico’s bestselling El Jimador (Eljimador.com) aids our appreciation.

“If you have blanco [un-aged tequila], drink it on the rocks. For anything else, drink it neat, as it contains more flavour.”

“Unless you want to look like a gringo, don’t do the salt and lemon shot. Sip it. And if you still want a hint of citrus flavour, add some lime cordial and soda to complement the alcohol’s sharpness.”

“Give it a swill around your mouth so the tip of your tongue gets flavours of caramel and vanilla, while the side of your mouth picks up spice.”

“Swallowing the drink will release another flavour via its oakiness. Generally, the oakier it is, the older it is — though you shouldn’t be looking for tequila that is any more than three years old.”
