VW Beetle does 0-60 in 1.6 secs

The VW Beetle isn't known for its speed. Indeed, after being embraced by the hippie culture in the 60s it's rather more closely associated with being stoned. Something that, at a guess, isn't conducive with pace.

Scrap all that. Two Brits have created the fastest 0-60 mph car in the world, from a 1965 Beetle and a milk float. Oh, and it runs on electricity.

Incredibly the car, nicknamed the Black Current, beat the previous record holder, the Tesla, at Santa Pod raceway in Northamptonshire, clocking a time of 1.6 seconds, that's 0.9 seconds faster than a Bugatti Veyron. It also covered a quarter of a mile faster than an F1 car can.

Designer Olly Young, 34, and his brother Sam, 30, built the car with 60 12-volt motorbike batteries. They claim it can do quicker, too. Good luck with that.
