19th century photo manipulations show how people had fun before Photoshop Battles

Hardly a day goes by when Reddit doesn't engage in an excellent Photoshop battle. From a mulleted Bryan Cranston Breaking Rad to a bear riding in cars with babes, photo manipulation makes everyone and everything better.

But before people had the latest Adobe edition torrented to their desktop, they had to make do with some scissors, glue, and overexposure.

Snapshot collector Robert E. Jackson has amassed 12,000 images in his life, and many of them are 19th and 20th century photo manipulations - usually of decapitations.

"Sometimes a photo exists simply to provide a smile or a laugh, without any hidden agenda or messages,” he said.
