The president of Iceland wants to ban pineapple on pizza

We are living in divisive times. As rifts push us further to opposing sides of the political spectrum, there are major issues driving change for better or worse at the moment.

One of those being pineapple on pizza. Sweet, chunky, hot fruit on gooey, cheesy, tomato dough.

You’re either for it or against it, there is no centre ground. You’re either deplorable or not.

But in the fight for what’s right, an unexpected warrior has entered the ring – Iceland’s president of four months, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson.

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson

While on a trip to a high school in the town of Akureyri in North Iceland, the politician answered questions from students including who his favourite football team was (Manchester United btw, outrageous given Iceland’s underdog performance in the World Cup) and the most pressing of issues – whether he was for or against pineapple as a pizza topping.

Turns out Jóhannesson fundamentally disagrees with the choice. In fact, he feels so strongly about the issue that he jokingly asserted he'd ban pineapple on pizza if he was able to make laws on his own.

And given that the professor-turned-politician has a 97 per cent approval rating, the sweet’n’savoury advocates may have something to worry about.

Maybe Donald Trump should take Jóhannesson’s lead and only joke about making ridiculous bans.
