Thanks to common sense and empirical knowledge, we've learnt that things the colour of charcoal shouldn't be put in your mouth. Coal. Charcoal. Black sand.

Japan appears to be flying in the face of such wisdom. Black food is currently in vogue in the land of the rising sun, following the success of Burger King's "Kuro Burger" (black burger), which sported black buns.

The Black Terra HotDog of Vegas Premium HotDogs in Akihabara, Tokyo, takes the craze one step further, serving customers a black 30cm frankfurter hot-dog in a black bun. The stomach-clenching colour is reportedly supplied by bamboo charcoal, a bitter-sweet food colouring agent used throughout Asia.

Would you? We wouldn't.
