This is the real history that inspired Game of Thrones
19 April 2016

Back in May last year, we ran a story concerning the rather alarming revelation that beloved rapper and advocate of soft drug use Snoop Dogg believed the world of Game of Thrones was 'historically accurate'.

We snorted. We chuckled. We raised our eyebrows in that "Oh lord, what a prat".

But we've an apology to make. No, it isn't historically accurate - Snoop is still an idiot - but George R R Martin did draw on a lot of real life history to inspire the events of his fantasy series. To understand these parallels and influences better, check out the following documentary (that appeared on the Season Five Blu Ray).
