TFI Friday is back for a full new series - and Chris Evans is hosting

Chris Evans is clearly going to be a very busy man.

Just days after the announcement that he is going to be the new host of Top Gear, comes the news that his TFI Friday show - which enjoyed a hugely successful one-off show two Fridays ago - is returning to Channel 4 for a brand new series, with the ginger one himself will be presenting.

Before the Top Gear announcement, this wouldn't have been a huge surprise; the 90 minute special was well-received despite the last half hour descending into something of a Top Gear audition (which, to be fair, proved pretty successful). It gained a peak audience of 4.2m viewers, a figure that Evans was quick to point out was twice as many as the show ever got during its original run between 1996 and 2000. However, the announcement of Evans as host is something of a surprise - throughout that show, he was strongly hinting that, were it come back permanently, then Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw would be the one to take over the job.

Nonetheless, eight new episodes have been commissioned, with Jay Hunt, Channel 4's creative officer commenting that "Chris is the best of the best of live broadcasters and I never doubted for a moment that this TFI would live up to expectations. Confirming a series was a no-brainer".

Evans confirmed the news in a tweet:

He later added in a statement: "Oh my goodness, are we really going to get to do this again? Looks like it - and leading into Christmas too. I might actually spontaneously explode on live television due to over excited-ness.‎ Does that still count as unpredictable cos [sic] I've said it now?"

Channel 4 added that the show would feature "top celebrity guests, leading music acts and a variety of colourful segments" and that it would "once again be a key part of the Friday night schedule".

It's unclear exactly how Evans will manage to balance his five-days-a-week job as presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Top Gear and TFI Friday, but if anyone can do it, we'd back him. Or, it will be a spectacular car crash like the last days of his time at Radio 1. Either way, it will surely be entertaining to watch.
