ITV to run Jeremy Clarkson's new motoring show in same time slot as Chris Evans' Top Gear

Fans of Top Gear could have been forgiven for getting a bit teary-eyed over last night’s final show featuring James May, Richard ‘Hamster’ Hammond and a massive 10ft plastic replica elephant built called Jeremy.

But if reports from The Mirror are to be believed, those same fans might soon have a choice to make now ITV intends to sign up the trio (the real Jeremy Clarkson, not the elephant) for a rival show which bosses intend to air at the same time as Top Gear’s next series.

Could parking the tank (possibly literally) on the lawn for ITV work? Just the prospect of a mammoth ratings war for that coveted blokeish demographic will be enough to leave the BBC and Top Gear’s new host Chris Evans in a bit of a tailspin, and you certainly wouldn’t put it past Clarkson.

The veteran broadcaster has remained indignant during the bitter fall-out and infighting from his departure on his show, and not exactly been full of praise for his new rival Evans, who, as it happens, has reportedly invited the former producer Clarkson punched, Oisin Tymon, back on the Beeb’s flagship car show.

According to The Mirror, ITV honchos plan to run the new and as yet untitled programme in Top Gear’s traditional slot of 8pm on Sunday evenings, with one source telling the paper: "The thought of making a show for the BBC’s main rival is very appealing for them. Jeremy was deeply hurt and angered by the briefing given by a mystery BBC executive which saw him linked with the name of Savile. Of course he’d like to take revenge for that slur.”

Should ITV pull off the proposed deal, the station will certainly go some way to finding the big male audience it has already lost having been outbid by BT and Sky Sports for Champions League rights. But as for competing with Top Gear, it's impossible to know which show will start in pole-position.

Let us know which one you’d watch below.
