'Trainspotting' author Irvine Welsh is writing a rave and acid house TV show

Old ravers assemble: we have some good news for you.

Irvine Welsh, the novelist responsible for the likes of Trainspotting and Filth, is co-writing a TV series about the origins and rise of acid house and rave culture in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

It’s going to be called Ibiza87 and will be loosely based on a trip taken to the famous party island by three of the most influential DJs of all time: Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Nicky Holloway. They are all contributing to the script, and will be helping to put the soundtrack together. Given Welsh already knows a thing or two about good soundtracks, this is likely to a suitably legendary collection of tracks.

In a statement, Paul Oakenfold said: “I’m very excited about this project... It ties in with the 30-year anniversary of our trip to Ibiza and what followed thereafter; the birth of the dance music club and festival scene as we know it today. It’s great to celebrate with this project as well as my world tour this year which is about just that, three generations of dance music.”

A press release for the show, in suitably understated fashion, calls it "...the missing link between 24 Hour Party People and Straight Outta Compton," with promises of "rollercoaster highs and lows [and] drug-fuelled excess".

Drugs? We thought they were all just happy. All those smiley faces right?

There’s currently no release date, but consider us thoroughly excited.
