Nearly two centuries have passed since Victor Hugo first gave the world The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, spawning more homages than we care to count.

And while it's unlikely Hugo ever wondered how his tale would look in HD, the book's legacy is now being drawn upon for a TV show - and, if we can be so bold, one that actually sounds worthy of the great author.

Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Roland Joffé, Ugly, co-produced by FreemantleMedia, will chronicle the titular character’s hardships in a 17th century France blighted by social and economic agendas, asking what it really means to be attractive?

With the project in the hands of an ethically-minded filmmaker whose credits include such critically acclaimed works as The Killing Fields, and a period backdrop as well, there’s enough here to suggest that it could be a fitting homage to Hugo’s work.

No word on a release date for the planned series yet, but we envision you’ll be watching this space intently.
