David Fincher's Weird GAP Ads
28 August 2014

The list of Hollywood directors to moonlight their talents in the ad industry is as long as it is well paid.

Having loaned his own creative nous/vision for a number of brands over the years - Nike, Heineken, Levis, HP, Coca Cola and Motorola, to name but a few - one such auteur is David Fincher. Not that he could ever be called a sell-out, of course...

Because while it probably helps that this is the guy who brought us The Social Network, Seven, Zodiac, and many more Oscar-bait classics, the biggest reason we’re happy for him to do them is that the ads he directs are often brilliant. With this new effort with GAP no exception.

A series of ‘50s set short clips related to movement and clothing, they’re even shot for in black and white for extra artistic merit. Some energetic slices of straight up Americana, others more enigmatic and broodier, if ever there was a reason to enjoy an ad break, this is it.

Next up for Fincher is thriller Gone Girl, due out in cinemas shortly. As for us, we've a strange desire to buy a pair of jeans...
