Move over high-octane movie trailers, there's a new HBO TV show in town and it's wielding one minute and 45 seconds of sofa-filling tension.

True Detectives is the gritty new cop drama from the US masters of episodic grandeur, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana detectives embroiled in a 17-year hunt for a serial killer. From the scene of a grizzly cult murder in 1995 to the reopening of investigations in 2012, the eight-episode series looks set to keep us entertained through the grim winter months of 2014.

Should the first season be a success, HBO plan for each subsequent series of True Detectives to follow different detective stories. We're keeping everything crossed it's as good as this trailer hints.
