Best ads of Super Bowl 2014

While we Brits might not get the rules, or indeed the surrounding carnage, that is Super Bowl Sunday, there is one aspect we can certainly admire: the ads.

And here we've picked the best of last night's action.

Bud Light

The mere fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger turns up in this Bud Light ad, donning a mullet and playing table tennis as an average Joe (not an actor) is plucked from a bar and given the night of his life, should be reason enough to bow down to Bud Light. Don Cheadle and his lama are just the icing on the ludicrous cake.

___________________________________________________________

Maserati

Themes of natural disaster, stunning CGI and narration provided by Oscar-nominated tyke Quvenzhané? Not a Beasts Of The Southern Wild sequel, but an advert for Maserati. Obviously.

___________________________________________________________

Volkswagen

We knew there was something suspect about German engineering…

___________________________________________________________

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Just an upcoming low-key indie film you probably won't have heard of. It's from a rising auteur called Michael Bay, apparently.

___________________________________________________________

Audi

Another advert tenuously tied to motoring, yet again, another which is still mightily funny. After a Chihuahua is bred with a Doberman - resembling a non-green version of that pumped up mutt in The Mask - chaos ensues.

___________________________________________________________

Microsoft

There’s always one tear-jerker. Step forward then, Microsoft, and its inspirational look at the (very emotional) impact new technologies can have.

___________________________________________________________

The Amazing Spiderman 2

A more expansive trailer of the forthcoming blockbuster, giving us a better glimpse of the main villains: namely Jamie Foxx's Electro and Chris Cooper's Green Goblin.

___________________________________________________________

Captain America: Winter Soldier

Cap’s back, and judging by this trailer we’re set for even more action than before. If the trailer’s not enough, you can get involved with the forthcoming Marvel blockbuster by clicking here.

___________________________________________________________

Jaguar

It might not be our kind of football, but this didn’t stop us Brits one-upping the US last night via Jaguar’s latest ad which enlisted some of cinema’s most celebrated British villains (Tom Hiddleston, Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong) in celebrating the understated elegance, stiffer upper lip, and of course shiny motors, imported by these fair isles. Terrific stuff.

___________________________________________________________

Coca-Cola

We figure this young lad, running all the way from the end zone of a junior football game right into a major stadium across town, had one too many Cokes.

___________________________________________________________

RadioShack

“The 80s called, it wants it’s store back” – and it duly follows through with the threat, rampaging into a branch of the US electronic chain with the likes of Hulk Hogan and other memorable faces of the era.

___________________________________________________________

T-Mobile

Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow might be out of contract, but after his brilliant work lampooning his unemployment for this T-Mobile commercial, we wouldn’t be surprised if Hollywood came knocking.

Car Max

The slow clap, that bastion of safety in so many feel good movies, is so cleverly played upon in this car retailer ad that you might start applauding yourself.
