When football managers take insults too far

Igniting the touchline like touchpaper, Jose Mourinho has forged something of a reputation for his explosive verbal outbursts in football.

And it appears even pre-season hasn’t deterred him from delivering a good tongue lashing -  responding to comments by Rafa Benitez’s wife that her husband cleans up after Mourinho’s messes, the special one retorted: “I think the lady needs to occupy her time and if she takes care of her husband's diet she will have less time to speak about me.”

It wasn’t just below the belt, it was above it, smack bang in the portly gut of his long-time managerial rival, reminding us all of how acidic the modern manager can be. 

Though it’s far from the only ill-advised remark made by a top level football manager. From Jose to Fergie, here are some of the funniest insults ever to fall from managerial mouths…
