Is this the assist of the season already?

Back in the days before four hours of analysis by G-Nev and Carra, heat maps and exhaustive (and exhausting) Opta Stats, it was the goalscorers and the goalscorers alone who got all of the glory.

Getting the last touch before it hit the onion bag was the only stat that counted in days gone by, but now those behind-the-scenes craftsmen, who prefer to create rather than finish are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

And we've rarely seen a greater example of the art of the assist than this utter beauty from Chievo Verona striker Riccardo Meggiorini, who - with the ball seemingly lost - pulled out an outrageous half-volleyed backheel cross to set up an easy header for teammate Alberto Paloschi to score in a 4-0 win for their team against Lazio in Serie A on Sunday.

Simply beautiful: watch below and enjoy.
