“Hi Joe, would you like to race against Lewis Hamilton this weekend?” That’s a stomach-churning proposition at the best of times; never mind when picking the phone up at a quarter to five on a Friday.

“It’ll be go–karting,” added the voice after a slight pause, allaying any fears I had that top Formula One scouts had deemed me good enough to join the starting grid with less than a day to prepare - butterflies were still present, just a little more subdued.
