The ShortListen: The Avalanches (no. 322)

A triumphant return for the Aussie sound collective

The ShortListen: The Avalanches (no. 322)
02 June 2016

Who? The Avalanches

What’s the story? With a work ethic that makes the Stereo MCs look productive, Aussie 'plunderphonics' (as Wikipedia describes them) act The Avalances are back with their first new track in over 15 years. They rose to prominence with 2000's still-incredible Since I Left You, which took samples from here, there and everywhere to create incredible sound collage hip hop tracks, but never followed it up - until now. The band themselves, rather politely, say on their Facebook page: "Sorry we kept you waiting, it's been a wild ride and at times we thought we would never make it through". So, was it worth the wait? Well, thankfully, yes. Within seconds that distinctive sound and old magic is back, with an oompah backing and a crazy old sample that you won't get out of your head all day. Rap duties on the verses are taken by Danny Brown and MF Doom, with the accompanying album announcement - Wildflower, due 8 July - showing that they'll be joined by the likes of Father John Misty, Jonathan Donahue and Toro Y Moi on the album too.
