The ShortListen: Palace Winter (no. 208)

Who? Palace Winter

What’s the story? Danish/Australian duo Palace Winter are responsible for one of our favourite songs of the year, in the form of the glorious widescreen-Smiths indie of Menton. We've had it on repeat ever since hearing it, and now the band unveil a video for another track taken from the EP, Medication, on which that song resides. New Ghost is a more laidback track than Menton, but no less atmospheric and haunting. It's more Empire of the Sun than Smiths, but at 1:30, they just can't resist a Johnny Marr-style guitar riff. Let's face it, who can? The nicely shot, black-and-white-with-dark-undertones video complements it perfectly and, once again, that last minute outro could go on forever as far as we're concerned. Excellent stuff.

For fans of: Empire of the Sun, The Smiths, Super Furry Animals

In three words: Atmospheric psych indie
