The ShortListen: Massive Attack (no. 358)

Stunning new track from the Bristolian legends

The ShortListen: Massive Attack (no. 358)
29 July 2016

Who? Massive Attack

What’s the story? No one does achingly beautiful and mournful quite like Massive Attack. And this new track which quietly slipped onto Spotify this morning, The Spoils, is another incredible addition to their canon. Returning on vocals is Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, who last sang with the band on Paradise Circus - the Luther-featuring highlight of their last full album, 2010's Heligoland, and once again she's a perfect fit for the slow, minimal beats and lush orchestration on the track. Whisper it quietly, but this could well be their best song since Teardrop.

Another track, Come Near Me, has also been released, featuring Ghostpoet, which is a darker, more electronic track - put these two tracks together with the four released on the Ritual Spirit EP earlier this year and you've got a pretty incredible mini-album. They're clearly in a rich vein of form: keep it coming, guys.

For fans of: The XX, Burial

In three words: Stunning and lush
