The ShortListen: Luna Shadows (no. 294)

Who? Luna Shadows

What’s the story? Breathy female singers are ten-a-penny on the big blogs, but LA-based newcomer Luna Shadows stands out from the rest due to the presence of good songs underneath the impeccable production. Following on from her excellent debut Cry Wolf and the very Lana Del Rey-esque Hallelujah California, comes the big ballad - and to call it epic would be something of an understatement. Thom Powers, of The Naked & Famous, is on production duty, and it builds up through a smoky, minimal electronic opening before erupting into a skyscraping chorus that an eighties power ballad would be proud of. Its only fault is that it's almost too perfectly produced, and too sweetly sung - but as criticisms go, we reckon she'll be pretty happy with that.

For fans of: Lana Del Rey, Sky Ferreira, Purity Ring

In three words: Epic electronic balladry
