The ShortListen: Krrum (no. 306)

Who? Krrum

What’s the story? As if we needed any further evidence of the impact that Prince had on, well, 95 per cent of modern music, along comes an absolute belter of an electro-funk tune that's clearly been at least partially-inspired by the Purple One's amazing music. Krrum is a 24-year-old Leeds artist and producer, and Hard On You is just his second track, following Evil Twin, which got the blogosphere very excited in February. The backing is full of brass stabs and squelchy bass, while Krrum's vocals float over the top, pleasingly silky and never veering into that super-sweet slickness beloved of many modern R&B tracks. This is a proper song, with a proper tune and with some proper funk. And what's not to like about that? 

For fans of: Jack Garratt, Gorillaz, Honne
