The ShortListen: Digitalism (no. 270)

Who? Digitalism

What’s the story? The tenth anniversary of nu-rave came and went recently without too much fanfare, but despite it being, all told, a rather strange time for music, there was some great music hidden away among all the hyperbolic nonsense. Chief among them was the dark electro of German duo Digitalism, and they're still going strong, with the announcement of third album Mirage, due for release on 13 May. Battlecry (above) is exactly that, an incendiary and anthemic blast of electronica which doffs a cap to EDM but stays altogether dirtier, in a good way. Meanwhile, Utopia (below) is more restrained, with six minutes of bubbling, weaving, peaks and falls. The new record should be a blast - just keep those neon face paint and smiley faces to yourselves this time around.

For fans of: Justice, Tiga, Cut Copy

In three words: Anthemic electronic return
