The ShortListen: Cubicolor (no. 227)

Radiohead-esque downbeat house

The ShortListen: Cubicolor (no. 227)
05 January 2016

Who? Cubicolor

What’s the story? Dutch producer Cubicolor was responsible for our sixth favourite song of 2015 (that's scientific, folks), with the incredible Magnum, and he's back with another beauty in the form of Falling. Rather excitingly, it manages the difficult task of being similar, yet very different from that track: it's downbeat and unhurried again, but sonically it's more in keeping with Kid A-era Radiohead rather than a straight-up dance track - a feeling enhanced by the Thom Yorke style vocals from Tim Digby-Bell. There's a gorgeous breakdown at two minutes which is the song's emotional peak, but the whole thing is rather excellent.

For fans of: Radiohead, Boards of Canada

In three words: Downbeat melancholic electronica
