Tesco Start Stocking Vinyl - Records Are Officially Mainstream Again

In the ongoing battle to keep vinyl relevant in the age of streaming and download, every little helps.

Quite literally in the case of supermarket behemoth Tesco, which has announced it is now stocking vinyl, starting this week when Iron Maiden’s new album The Book of Souls hits shelves in both CD and vinyl format in 55 of the larger Tesco Extra stores across the UK.

So should we expect a swarm of bearded trend setters locking up their fixies outside a Tesco near you in the near future? Don’t bet against it.

Moving in line with the wave of independent stores and high street fashion chains (Topshop, Urban Outfitters) which also champion vinyl records, Tesco, which already sells vintage-style turntables, are in a roundabout way changing the way we think about vinyl purchasing.

These sentiments are echoed by Maiden’s music buyer Michael Mulligan, who told Music Business Worldwide: “It was a proud moment when the UK’s biggest supermarket created a landmark opportunity for us to present our fans with a one-stop shop for our brand new album and award winning Trooper beer."

And who knows, maybe Tesco will go the whole hog, open up a new store in Shoreditch, staff it full of people to cool to serve you and install a massive microbrewery.
