Cinema has its work cut out. With so much great TV out there, films have to be special in order for you to part with your money. We’ve not even factored in the price of nachos and pop.

It seems cinema is being given another run for its money by Top Of The Lake, which not only has Oscar winner Jane Campion on board as co-writer and director, but also boasts a cast featuring Elizabeth Moss, Peter Mullan and Oscar winner Holly Hunter. Rather than being buried in the box, the cream of Hollywood is finding salvation there.

Top Of The Lake tells the tale of Tui Mitcham, a 12-year-old girl and daughter of a local drug lord. She is saved from the freezing waters of a lake in New Zealand and discovered to be pregnant. However, Tui won’t reveal who the father is, before disappearing.

Detective Robin Lake (Moss) investigates and begins an obsessive hunt for the girl and soon discovers that she’s not just looking for Tui, but also searching for herself.

Welcome to Top Of The Lake, a contender for your new favourite television programme.

Top Of The Lake is officially released on 19 August but is available to order now on Blu-ray and DVD, and can be downloaded on iTunes.
