Matt Smith To Play Patrick Bateman In American Psycho Musical

Who's a psycho. Who? Exactly.

Matt Smith has done some pretty edgy things since freeing himself of the Doctor Who shackles. First, he shaved his head. Then, he (and said head) appeared in Ryan Gosling's forthcoming directorial debut How To Catch A Monster as a musclebound bully. And now, he's stepping out of the Who shadow and straight into the loafers of Christian Bale, after being cast as Patrick Bateman in the American Psycho musical.

Amended from the classic Bret Easton-Ellis novel of a sadistic Wall Street banker, the show will see Smith both sing and dance to a slick Eighties soundtrack, harnessing his stage chops earned from previous roles in The History Boys, That Face and Swimming With Sharks.

The hotly anticipated musical is due to start at London’s Almeida Theatre on 12 December, with view to a West End and Broadway production, should it be a success. Will it be? Who knows (sorry).
