With Daniel Craig increasingly likely to hang up his holster as England’s least secretive secret agent – a rumour all but confirmed to ShortList by his pal Mark Strong – bookies' favourite Tom Hiddleston has given his biggest hint yet that he'd like to replace him.

Quizzed by The Sunday Times on what the actor makes of all the interest regarding reports of him replacing Craig, Hiddleston said:

“Time magazine ran a poll and there were, like, 100 actors on the list, including Angelina Jolie. But, yes, it’s nice to be included in the 100.

“I’m a huge fan of the series. We all went to see Spectre when we were shooting Skull Island in Hawaii. I simply love the theme tune, the tropes and the mythology. I love the whole thing. If it ever came knocking, it would be an extraordinary opportunity.”

Once done gushing over the series, Hiddleston then spoke of how he was seriously mindful of how demanding the role would be: “I’m very aware of the physicality of the job. I would not take it lightly.”

Hiddleston, who, much like the super sleuth, also boasts a prestigious education, having attended Eton and Cambridge University, would certainly seem a perfect fit for the role, bolstered by his already A-list appeal and the fact he looks good with a suit hanging off him.

In fact, in some quarters, Hiddleston’s latest role, that of a hotelier-turned-spy aiming to take down a murky arms dealer in the BBC’s glossy John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager, has even been seen as his unofficial Bond audition.

If there were any actor capable of ordering complex Martinis and writing off Aston Martins, it would be hard to argue against this one.
