You must feel as though you've been to Times Square quite a lot lately.
From a bedraggled Michael Keaton dodging crowds in his Y-fronts to a web-slinging superhero causing a ruckus, the landmark has played a major part in two of Hollywood’s biggest recent smashes. Those would be The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Alejandro Iñárritu’s artier superhero flick Birdman, in case you’d forgotten.
In fact, before deciding it more authentic to shoot his crowd scene for real, guerrilla style, Iñárritu almost repurposed the huge man-made Times Square set built for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So we can only assume how superfluous he would have found the accompanying VFX work…
Sony Pictures Imageworks has just released a VFX breakdown to highlight the stunning fight scene between Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Jamie Foxx’s Electro in the middle of Manhattan. As well as showing just what went into such a colossal production, giving you a great insight into the making of a modern blockbuster, it also looks a bit like the best video game you’ve never played.
He's certainly come a long way from the comic book.
