Tetris film in the works

Humanity lies on the brink of collapse. Wars and industry have ravaged the planet. As an intergalactic menace threatens to enslave the last scatterings of civilisation, the leaders of Earth place their hopes in an untested weapon - a legion of shapes, varying in size, whose ability to neatly tessellate could be the key to saving us all. This, or something like it, could be the storyline of the newly announced Tetris movie.

Threshold Entertainment has announced a partnership with The Tetris Company to develop a feature length film based around the biggest-selling video game of all time.

Having sold some 143 million copies since 1984 without a hint of a narrative, Threshold Entertainment are looking to tell an "epic sci-fi story" inspired by the shape-based puzzler. Their previous work includes a video game adaptation of Mortal Kombat, in addition to a series of theme park films and LEGO specials, and production work on Terminator 2, True Lies, Dirty Dancing and Platoon.

It's yet to be clarified if the Tetris film will be animated or live action, with Managing Director of The Tetris Company Henk Rogers stating that the project will be headed to the "big screen" rather than television release. "In this new universe," says Rogers, "there's much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines." So long as it features Korobeiniki as the theme tune, we're happy. And it's bound to be better than Battleship, right guys? Guys?
