Schwarzenegger: "I've been asked to do Running Man 2"

It's a film that has probably never been more relevant than it is in today's reality TV-filled world, but no one was really expecting a sequel to the 1987 dystopian classic The Running Man.

But its star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played Ben Richards has claimed that he has been asked back for a sequel. During a recent Q&A session, he stated, "They’re doing a Twins sequel, to be called Triplets - I’ve read the first draft. There’s rumblings of a new Running Man movie, so it’s a great honour to be asked back... [Getting in shape for these sequels] comes back to bodybuilding, I’m used to doing cardiovascular training every day. Therefore I’m still in good shape, and I can do the action and have the energy to do these movies."

It's the first 'concrete' suggestion that there could be a follow-up to the much-loved film, based upon the novel of the same name written by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman), but the book itself was based in 2025, so it would be temporally appropriate at least. With the success of The Hunger Games - itself thematically close to The Running Man, it would not be surprising were it to happen.
