While we were a bit divided over Ridley Scott's much-hyped Alien prequel Prometheus, it certainly hinted at an untapped universe that could do with a good tapping.

Since it's made over $300 million internationally, making it the most successful film of the entire franchise, a sequel is currently being developed over at Fox. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the studio are “actively pushing ahead with a follow-up” and are hoping for it to reach us by 2014.

Apparently they are discussing the sequel with a new set of writers as Prometheus co-writer, and Lost co-creator, Damon Lindelof might not be available. Which, given some of the film's script-based problems, could be a blessing.

Surviving stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are both contracted to make a sequel while Ridley Scott has always spoken about the film as being the start of a new franchise.

"Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," Emma Watts, president of production at Fox told The Hollywood Reporter.

While Scott himself has spoken before about his thoughts on a follow-up.

“From the very beginning, I was working from a premise that lent itself to a sequel," he told Movies.com. "I really don’t want to meet God in the first one. I want to leave it open to [Noomi Rapace’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw] saying, ‘I don’t want to go back to where I came from. I want to go where they came from.’"
