Netflix’s new Hulk Hogan documentary looks like essential viewing

The latest original documentary on its way to Netflix couldn’t have come at a better time.

With debates over press freedom playing a big part in the American political landscape, and questions over media influence rife on this side of the Atlantic, the streaming service is set to roll out a feature-length documentary covering Hulk Hogan’s legal wrangle with Gawker Media.

The ex-professional wrestler sued Gawker for invasion of privacy, among other claims, after the publication published part of a sex tape which he alleged was created without his consent.

The lawsuit sparked a widespread debate over press freedom and first amendment rights, and has now spawned a documentary entitled Nobody Speak.

The upcoming addition to the Netflix Originals series of programmes was directed by award-winning filmmaker Brian Knappenberger, and was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in the US Documentary category.

The sex tape at the heart of the lawsuit is only part of the story, with the documentary promising to delve into media influence and the people behind the scenes.

In addition to Peter Thiel’s part-funding of Hogan’s lawsuit, Nobody Speak will look at billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s purchase of the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper as part of a detailed look at how much the super-rich are able to influence the media.

Nobody Speak will be available to watch on Netflix from June 23.
