Got a script? It’d be a lot cooler if you did.
Such is the importance of film auditions, many of Hollywood’s most beloved actors wouldn't be quite as well-known today had they not ‘tested well’ for that big break. Or, yes, forgot to take along their script...
So then let’s all take a moment and thank our lucky stars that Matthew McConaughey was convincing enough in the audition process for coming-of-age classic Dazed & Confused, warranting him the role of David Wooderson and all the future Oscar glory that followed.
Well now thanks to a special Criterion release of the film, footage of that audition has now emerged, which shines a light on that key audition between McConaughey and director Richard Linklater, both unaware quite what cult status lie just around the corner.
Appearing much more fresh faced than his moustachioed ladies man did in the film, the young actor, complete with trademark grin, tests opposite Wiley Wiggins (Mitch Kramer in the film), and even gets to quote some of Wooderson’s now infamous lines.
Insightful, intimate and raw – it’s an astounding snapshot of cinema history. But then that’s the great thing about old audition tapes…we keep getting older but they stay the same age.
