Matt Damon stars in first clip for Ridley Scott's 'The Martian'

"I don't even know what language that is... is that Armenian?"

Ridley Scott has gone back to space - but Alien this is not.

Based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel of the same name, The Martian is a far more topical sci-fi than Scott's previous "things that go bump in the pipes" outings. Matt Damon stars  (no pun intended) as Mark Watney, a NASA botanist and mechanical engineer, journeying to Mars aboard the Ares 3 spacecraft with crew of five specialist astronauts.

The first trailer establishes the tone of the piece in calm, excitable manner similar to the likes of Duncan Jones' Moon and Danny Boyle's Sunshine. And as is the case in most big spectacle sci-fi trips, there's a sense not everything is going to go according to plan.

Get a taste of this artful, alien-free space piece in the trailer below.

The Martian arrives in cinemas on 27 November 2015
