Casting comedians to play comedians in major films is nothing new. It’s a no-brainer, in fact - a well-worn formula.
But when the lead man happens to be Chris Rock, AKA one of the greatest stand-ups of all-time. Well, you pay close attention, particularly after laying eyes on this slickly funny first trailer for Top Five.
Rock stars as Andre Allen, once voted ‘the funniest man in America’ and now critically ravaged for a raft of flop films at the box office (not to be too unkind to Rock, but he needn't go too method for this particular plot point…) who buddies up with Rosia Dawson’s journalist to make a po-faced documentary about the Haitian revolution.
Much in the vein of Funny People, it looks set to be a satirical lampooning of celebrity culture of the highest order, packing in faux reality TV show relationships, the hangers-on, sleazy agents and those more mundane bits of being famous as the star hankers for his next blockbuster hit.
Not that reality should ape fiction. The buzz coming out of the Toronto film festival for the picture was incredible. So much so that Paramount snapped it up for a cool $12m.
