Danny Boyle says Trainspotting 2 closer than ever - and all the actors want to return

“Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a f**king HD television, Choose washing machines, electric cars, MP3 players, and 3D-printed tin openers…”

If this classic speech feels a little more up to date, that’s because Danny Boyle has now claimed the sequel to 1996’s Trainspotting is closer than ever – and it’s fair to say we’ve been waiting a while.

First came the script problems (Boyle has made no secret of his indifference to Irvine Welsh’s 2002 follow-up novel Porno, describing it as “not a great book”); then the obvious casting issues (Ewan McGregor only recently patched up his differences with Boyle, having fallen out with the director when he buckled to studio pressure to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in 2002’s The Beach), but now, lo and behold, it appears availability may be the only stumbling block left.

Speaking after a special screening of his latest awards contender, Jobs, Danny Boyle told Deadline he planned Trainspotting 2 to be his next movie, and that “all the four actors want to come back and do it”, adding “it's only a matter of getting all [the actors'] schedules together.”

The chief pair being Johnny Lee Miller (Sick Boy), currently working on Elementary, and Robert Carlyle (Begbie), working on Once Upon A Time, with both men likely to have demanding schedules due to the hit shows.

Once again written by screenwriter John Hodge, the script, which Boyle says is “terrific”, is still based on Welsh’s Porno, in which Renton managed a nightclub in Amsterdam, Sick Boy made inroads in the porn business, and Begbie was fresh out of jail and looking for trouble. Again.

It also sees Spud contemplate suicide. For his sake, let’s hope he chooses life.
