'I would miss it terribly' Daniel Craig backtracks on James Bond decision

The Daniel Craig/Bond “will he, won’t he” saga feels like it’s stretched on for as long as the Bond franchise itself. Well, since Spectre came out, but you know what we mean.

Now Craig has fueled further speculation, telling fans at the New Yorker festival this weekend, “I’ve got the best job in the world doing Bond. The things I get to do on a Bond movie and the type of work it is, there’s no other job like it.”

He continued “If I were to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly. I love this job. I get a massive kick out of if and if I can keep getting a kick out of it, I will.”

This, of course, is a notable turnaround from his comments last year, when during a publicity interview for Spectre he said that he’d rather “slash his wrists” than do another Bond film.

We’ll let him off that one, though – after filming Spectre for a full year and publicizing the film non-stop, he was probably sick to death of 007.

The reported $150m Sony offered for another two installments might have changed his tune – though he’s since denied those rumours.

Arguably, it’s the right time for Craig to step away from the franchise. After some sterling work, bringing 007 bang up to date in Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall, for many viewers it felt like Spectre was a logical end to his run as the super spy.

With plenty of other names thrown into the razor-tipped hat – Poldark’s Aiden Turner, Tom Hughes, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, and Alan Partridge (our personal pick) – is Craig a shoo-in for Bond? Does he have what it takes to stick around as her Majesty's finest?

Well if you’re thinking that at 48 Daniel Craig’s too old, you can think again – Roger Moore was a ripe old 58 when he found himself (well, his stunt double) dangling off the back of a fire engine in A View To A Kill, and something tells us that if he truly wants it (and it seems Sony do) there's plenty of life in the old dog yet.
